Big Kid Rooms- Help

When we move into the new house I am going to put Abby in her own room. I am excited because I never really got to decorate her nursery the way I wanted to when we were renting. I am also looking forward to this because it is going to free up the dresser/changing table for baby 2. Abby has been sleeping in our room with us on a mattress on the floor. I want to get her a own twin bed and a frame, some cube storage, and some of those plastic storage drawers for her closet. I can't decide if I want to buy a bed with drawers at the bottom or just buy a metal bed frame with a separate dresser. Here are some of the things I'm looking at all from Walmart.com. I will look at Craigslist too once we actually move. Right now I am in the window shopping and planning stage. If I get the bed with the 3 drawers underneath I am going to hold off on getting a dresser for now because I'll use those drawers and the plastic drawers. If any of you can share what you did for your kiddos or your thoughts that would be great :)

Re: Big Kid Rooms- Help

  • Super cute ideas. I don't have any ideas to share. Liliana is also with us (well, I should say me). She is in the bed with me and DH is in his own room. It is a big reason why we want to move into a house with a big master bedroom. I don't mind co-sleeping but DH is resentful and wants her to sleep in her own room. She has just never wanted to be alone. Plus, I'm still nursing her and it is super easy for middle of the night feedings. (Yes, she still wakes up to nurse.)

  • Do you have an IKEA that is driveable?

It's in Miami. So 2 1/2 hours away :( I loved when I lived in Philly because Ikea was 10 minutes away. Best thing ever!

  • I would go with the bed with drawers. They are usually better quality. Then too, it's one less thing to worry about her climbing on = ). One idea with the plastic bins is to cover them with fabric or scrapbook paper or paint them. I might have to do this with Elias cause I really don't have room or extra funds for a dresser but his closet is getting out of control and driving me crazy!

  • We just have a twin mattress on a box spring on the floor.  No bed frame yet.  But we want to get one eventually for Lily.  We have a tall dresser for her.  We need to paint it and get new handles.  It's a free hand me down from my parents.  We also have a cube organizer shelf in Lily's room with a few cubes for some toys and the rest of the shelves for books.  Her lamp sits on her cube shelf.  And we have a 5 gallon fish tank on top of her dresser.  Lily's room has been a work in progress, slowly changing from her nursery decor to what it is now.  I actually still have the artwork from her nursery up as it's princess related and she loves princess stuff still.  Add in some Minnie Mouse stuff, butterfly stuff and that's her room now.  Haha.

Once Josie is sleeping in a bed for most of the night (which was between 18 months and 2 years for Lily) we will have the girls share a room. So I'll probably wait to really do a theme until then.

Tara - I think that's great that you are still nursing.  I nursed Lily before bed and before nap until I got pregnant again, so she was a few months over 2.  And I also enjoyed cosleeping.  DH hated it though.  It just worked so well for me while nursing.  He's not hip to the idea that we will be again.  I suggested the idea of getting a full size bed for the nursery so I can sleep in there with Josie and he doesn't have to deal with it.  But he hates that idea too.  Basically he doesn't want me to cosleep.  So right now I'm co sleeping with her on the futon in the basement.

  • As a guy, I get the not liking co sleeping thing.  Ryan tends to sleep between Joy and I more often than not.  I usually end up with a small sliver of the bed and he's sideways and Joy gets another small sliver by the time we wake up.  Not only that, but I like to snuggle which is hard to do with a 16 month old between you.

So while it was cute when he was smaller, both of us really want him in his bed at this point, but at this point he doesn't want to go because he's been in our bed so much.

I hear ya. I suggested to DH that when we move we can get a king size bed and there will be plenty of room for the three of us, but he is against it. :(

  • H actually loves having Abby sleeping with us because he doesn't get to see her as much as I do. I need the time to myself in my own room. Especially since I am now due with baby 2 and will get huge and will worry about Abby kicking me.  Plus baby 2 will be in our room for a while as well.

  • We have a king size bed and P gets his half.  Lily was a snuggler so she was always on my side.  I was usually the only one dealing with no space.  He said it's because he can't snuggle, but he's really not a snuggler.  Maybe a bit before falling asleep, otherwise he moves around a lot in his sleep.  Plus he gets hot easily and usually would pull away from me trying to cuddle because I was cold.  -- But ultimately I think it is about just wanting that space to be his/ours.

And we did/do have Lily moved to her own bed.  We started around 18 months.  By 2 she was in her bed most of the night.  she would still come to our bed around 4-5am if she woke up.  But eventually she even stopped doing that.  I'm also looking into getting a bed rail for my side of the bed.  Putting me in the middle and letting Josie sleep on "my" side for co sleeping.  Then DH can cuddle if he wants.
